20 Years Experience

Stephen earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Miami University and his MBA in Finance and International Business from Indiana University.

Stephen is a Certified Investment Management Analyst and a Certified Estate Planner.

Stephen began his career at Smith Barney Shearson, a predecessor firm to Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in 1990 and incorporates a personal family perspective to his wealth management career. Steve’s family experienced a significant liquidity event resulting from the sale of a multi-generation family business. Steve experienced first hand how sudden wealth can both help and harm those who are given the responsibility of managing a significant amount of capital. Through these experiences, Steve has learned what families can do to successfully manage their family assets to benefit both current and future generations.

This real world experience has evolved into significant professional experience related to all areas of family wealth management including education, strategic planning, governance, and mission statement development. Steve’s extensive experience and focus allows him to assist families with the successful transfer of financial, social and intellectual capital from one generation to the next. Steve has counseled numerous families facing major liquidity events such as the sale of a business, death, retirement or divorce. He has worked closely with other wealth advisors and various kinds of professional intermediaries in over $750 million of business liquidity events in the last three years alone.

Steve’s vision in all areas of investment management and the myriad of potential issues that surround personal wealth accumulation, management and preservation are the cornerstone of the Rock Harbor Group. Steve advises Rock Harbor Group clients in complex areas of concern such as control and restricted securities transactions, hedging and monetization of highly concentrated stock positions, philanthropic planning, personal security, estate planning, and art and aircraft advisory.

Steve has a long and accomplished career. He was named by Barron's and Registered Representagive Magazine as one of the top Financial Advisors in the United States on multiple occasions and as one of the top Top Advisors in Michigan in 2007, 2008 and 2009 by Crain’s Detroit Business.

1 Barron's Top 1,000 Advisors, as identified by Barron’s Winner's Circle, bases its rankings on qualitative criteria: professionals with a minimum of 7 years' financial services experience, acceptable compliance records, client retention reports, customer satisfaction, and more. With over 3,000 advisors nominated annually, advisors are quantitatively ranked based on varying types of revenues and assets advised by the financial professional, with weightings associated for each. Additional measures include: in-depth interviews and discussions with senior management, peers, and customers, and telephone-based and in-person interviews with the nominees. Because individual client portfolio performance varies and is typically unaudited, this ranking focuses on customer satisfaction and quality of advice. For more information on ranking methodology, go to www.WCorg.com. The rating may not be representative of any one client's experience because it reflects a sample of all of the experiences of the advisor's clients. The rating is not indicative of the advisor's future performance. Neither Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC nor its financial advisors pay a fee to The Winner's Circle or Barron's in exchange for the rating. 2 These Top 20 financial advisers were chosen by The Winner’s Circle by Barron’s as Detroit’s leading advisers based on criteria such as assets managed, customer satisfaction and assessments by coworkers and clients. Neither Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC nor its financial advisors pay a fee to The Winner's Circle or Barron's in exchange for the rating. The ranking process begins with a national survey of approximately 100 securities firms, insurance companies, bank, independent financial advisor practices and other organizations that employ series-7 registered financial advisors; each of these firms promote objective and independent advice with open-architecture access to financial products. These lists are based on qualitative criteria, including: managing partners with a minimum of 7 years financial services experience, and other weighted criteria ranging from productivity per partner, credentials, acceptable compliance records and wealth management focus to customer satisfaction reports and other data that firms provide. Teams are quantitatively ranked based on an algorithm that weights varying types of revenues, and custodied and non-custodied assets advised by the financial professional, with weightings associated for asset types. The ranking does not consider portfolio performance
